OK - Let's rock

The top 10 rock albums according to this rubbish mag I've bought (complete with traffic light colour coded ratings - sorry Gartside) are:

10. Nirvana - Nevermind
Ace. Now prefer Bleach as less polished and have overheard this. Would never have heard Bleach if it weren't for this though.

9. Slayer - Reign in Blood
Breakthrough early 80s heavy album. As influential to hard rock as Pixies/Smiths are to softer stuff.

8. Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet
Get out of it.

7. Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks
I've always thought this was ok but overrated.

6. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Don't like glam like rock/metal with spandex.

5. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Very influential again (early 70s), though I prefer Paranoid which has Planet Caravan on.

4. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Much prefer earlier Led Zep. Early Led Zep would have got a green rating.

3. AC/DC - Back in Black
I've never really got AC/DC. Dressing up a schoolboy and playing guitar etc.

2. Metallica - Master of Puppets
Brilliant album. Haven't liked anything since 91 from this band though.

1. Guns N Roses – Appetite for Destruction
A good rock album, but not that good.

wot no persistence of time by anthrax?

agreed about the pistols.its a good album but they were the manufactured band of the day.i remember seeing a documentary on punk on bbc2 where captain sensible was talking about how he thinks johnny rotten sounded like old man steptoe.but then again, captain sensible did the big break theme tune plus a cover of happy talk so anything he says is nullandvoid

I'm surprised that you only like 4 out of Kerrang's top 10 "rock" albums - it must be a specific sub-genre that you prefer? Prog-rock perhaps, or thrash? Really surprised that you don't like AC/DC. Whole Lotta Rosie? Even I like that.

What about "Reek of Putrefaction" by Carcass? Or Napalm Death? Megadeth? Or anything else with death in the name.

I'm also surprised that Led Zep I/II/III didn't make the top 10 (not that I care - I hate them).

Never Mind the Bollocks was indeed manufactured, but at that time the songs sounded absolutely brilliant (Anarchy in the UK/God Save the Queen/Pretty Vacant/Bodies...)- full of energy and a stark contrast to the MOR dross that was everywhere in 1976. The graphics by Jamie Reid are design classics. I'm not sure that a punk album should be in a list of 'rock' (ie heavy metal) albums in Kerrang - it was that genre that they were reacting against! If they allow the Pistols into the list then they may as well open the door to The Clash/Damned/New York Dolls... etc. What was the full 100? Get typing Lunt...

Da Ward - I actually played 'Got the Time' live at a youth club once when I was bass player for 'Chronic Dementia' (what a band) in our only gig. Needless to say we went down like a Wed Zeppelin, though at least I got to play a bass solo. Song hasn't aged that badly though the
hairdoo’s have.

Got the Time from YouTube

MS - Have seen the best band to come out of Liverpool (aka Carcass) live actually on their Heartwork tour. Were so good I bought a T-shirt. Have seen Megadeth live (with Metallica) and they were good as well. May I qualify this above by saying I haven't been on the pulse in the scene for 'quite some time'. I saw all the above when I was about 16. Having said that, the scene died in the early 90s as far as I’m concerned. I hate the vocal style of most of the 'nu metal' nonsense. I did like specific sub genres, generally guitar led music where they play quickly and vocalist shout.

Re new stuff, I’ve just bought the new Jarvis Cocker album. Am hoping for ace lyrics. Will find out when listening on the Monday morning commute tomorrow (sigh).

search google for lyrics to vive la persistence by kimya dawson

Smaje,i can imagine you at the age of seven burning your genesis and yes albums and sticking safety pins in your lip.

the supposed clash, pun unintended,of genres doesn't suprise me.the pistols themselves covered small faces and eddie cochrane songs live, both acts the polar favourites of the mods and rockers ten year earlier.

ps.Blimey,i have twenty of those I've suprised myself there.great inclusion of black crowes, and blood sugar sex magik, and weezer.i think showbiz is best muse album

smashing pumpkins eh?solo to cherub rock is one of my favourites ever.

alice cooper..i gather rotten's audition for pistols was to sing along to eighteen by alice cooper.we're not worthy.

i thought we may see some hendrix there.

There really are some absolute shockers in there (eg Def Leppard), but then that's the kind of stuff I expected to see in a Kerrang list. Impressed with the inclusion at #63 of a Big Black album, though surprised they didn't choose 'Songs About F*cking'.

(Btw, Mward, I wasn't saying that I found the Pistols' stuff exciting first time round - I think that the Barron Knights were my favourites around that time. I did hear them around 1981 and was amused by all the swearing.)

I think I have 4 of those albums.

It's a travisty that there's a top 100 rock album list without the epitomy of rock themselves...the Fast Food Rockers.

It's even in their name for flips sake.
